Champlain
Township Public Library has come a long way from its humble origins
operating out of private homes. Located for many years at the former
Vankleek Hill Town Hall, the library moved to its present location
at 94 Main Street East after the St. John's Masonic Lodge purchased
the building in 1984 from The Bank of Nova Scotia and subsequently
transferred ownership of the building to the Town.
Extensive renovations to the library began in December of 2001 for
the first time in 18 years. In designing the new space, special attention
was paid to maximize the use of space while keeping the historical
integrity of the building and at the same time creating an attractive
yet practical space for the public to enjoy. J. Denis
Séguin, of HOK Canada Ltd., contributed his architectural expertise
as well as many hours of work to the project resulting in a spectacular
library for all residents of Champlain Township to enjoy.
Work was completed in the spring of 2002 and on April 6, 2002 the
public was invited to an Open House. This event was well-attended
and gave the public a chance to not only view the newly renovated
library but to meet with many of the design staff as well as to view
a photographic account of the renovations. Library Board
